    1. How would we go about being dlisted from apews database? We are a email hosting company.

    2. Firstly, being listed in the Apews database will not be a problem provided that all receivers of your emails have given their consent to receive, e.g. the confirmed opt in process for newsletter subscription. They will or could all whitelist your email servers before any blacklist checks are done during SMTP.

If you or your clients are in any way broadcasting emails across a database of unconfirmed recipients, then that would likely get you blacklisted in many blacklists.

You should assess the reputation of the IP addresses that you have, and if the provider has a bad reputation then you would be better to to rent unlisted IP address space.

You may find it worth while to register your IP addresses with a whitelist e.g. dnswl.org or whitelisted.org since some recipients check them before the blacklists.

Lets say that you got some IP addresses a short while ago and have now discovered that they're listed in Apews.org. Obviously you would like to get your IP address space delisted and pump out your emails, but... Apews is an early warning system and maybe listed an IP address block because the owner was slow or careless about spam problems. If you rent IP addresses from that owner, from the point of view of the folks elsewhere on the internet, what has changed? Nothing. The same owner still owns the same IP addresses and is still slow or careless in watching their IP allocation. That means that if there is a fresh spam problem from your newly acquired IP addresses, the rest of the internet community can expect zero help, just stacks of spam. Therefore it would be right to leave the IP block listed since it is still owned by the same people that gave it a bad reputation in the first place.

We've seen various comments about how much of the internet is listed by Apews, and it seems like about half is not listed so some IP addresses out of those would be your best bet. Over the years very few if any IP owners have reformed after permnitting spam out of their IP space. If you're not experienced in this sort of thing, search for information on snowshoe spammers, pink contracts and whack-a-mole, you'll see why the folks have had it with those games.

  2. I have a small host service, and the IP's from my server are listed in your list (just your list, in an universe of lists).
I control the e-mail personaly and if we had problem, it occurred almost two months ago, and I talked with my client and it stopped of sending its marketing e-mail immediately.
This company just did it one day and I'm not sure if this deserves cause this absurd situation.
Now I have 20 companies with Hotmail mails being blocked, because of the politic of an irresponsable citizen that decided that the problem of the world can be resolved only for his point of view.
One afternoon, maybe less than it, causes this stupid nuisance in a very serious job, with a company that takes a special care and respect of the internet users.
The worst are the false positives, a very cruel irresponsibility.
    Thank's for this trash service!

    1. You've answered your own question, you were responsible for a server, you misjudged a client and had a spam problem, your server IP was caught and correctly blacklisted, you are still responsible for the server. It looks like you do not have the necessary experience to operate an email host business if you can not judge the character of people. Don't ask the rest of the internet community to clean up after your mistake. Are you or your client offering to pay anything to those that were affected? How can they contact you?
BTW we think that Hotmail have their own system for filtering spam and likely do not use Apews.org.

    2. Your answers are not reasonable. Now we know that any server that had a minor malfunction or took 24 hours before a spammer was removed from it can be on the list. Half of all the IP's in the world is already on the list. APEWS blocks suddenly means nothing more then that the owner of the list likes attention. It is not a list you can rely on or has any real mening so Im gonna ignore it.

    3. This is very upsetting. Why should you be able to list my website in your database. And for me to have no way to remove it. I am the only one who uses the email server. And we are just a site of middle aged cat lovers. A very tight knit group of friends. And you are damaging my good name.

  3. I don't understand why and entire trunk of network is blacklisted, instead to put each subnet provided by carrier Telecom Italia.
We have a our own mail server, and we have 8 public ip assigned, where one aof them is our mailserver.

Due to a absurd criteria, the entire subnet 88.62.0.0/17 is blacklisted on APEWS.ORG, so our little network that it belongs, is blacklisted.

RFC41 States that only the nwtwork owner, so Telecom Italia, could do something about this, but is like an anchovy asking help to a whale.

    No way to avoid blacklisting?

    1. Sorry, about above ... I've forgot to give our ip (two adsl lines) are 94.81.163.250 and 82.105.165.151.

I agree with the previous post. Is too easy for people put in blacklist half the world, and we should begin to talk about the 'RBL reputation', because some of them (like APEWS.ORG) is too poor, because is giving too many false positives.
      Please be more professional.

      Delete
    2. Maybe best to read the above posting about IP owner reputation. If Telecom Italia is the owner of the IP address space then they are responsible for it. They choose to rent smaller parts to other people, and some of those will be spammers and others not. However, if over the years Telecom Italia have earned the reputation of being careless about spam problems, what has changed since? Nothing. It is still Telecom Italia, same policy, same reputation = still listed. Begs the question, why would you insist on using their IP address space? If you are deciding based on price then you don't value your emails very highly.

  4. Hi there.

I have just switched ISP to get a PTR record for my server which has been running the same domains since 1999.

The IP is 188.181.189.234 with a PTR record of mail.burgundia.dk - and my server presents it self too as just that. When I look up my IP in the datebase, it's listed as dynamic and without PTR record...and both are wrong.

When I look at http://multirbl.valli.org - I'm "told" that no one should take apews seriously as they don't have any removal service. I think thart creating a simple removal function would greatly increase the value and number of users of the system, along with credibility...

    Thank you in advance!

    1. If you check the whois record for your IP address, TDC are announcing a /23, some 500 IP addresses as static adsl. That just means that the 500 IP addresses are not part of a dynamic pool e.g. DHCP. However, TDC still show the 188.176.0.0/13 as the parent block which includes the /23. I suspect that the /13 was all dynamic or residencial but you should appreciate that a lot has changed since 1999.

You are right in that Apews don't appear to operate any removal system which is why this blog was started for publishing errors and improving their data. Lets hope that Apews agree with changin their listing, assuming that TDC are providing PTR records for static users of that /23. TDC can write more information on their whois record to clarify.

  33. Hello,

I've noticed the range 194.78.60.0/22 has been blacklisted since late 2010. Those 1024 addresses are from hundreds of legitimate companies in Belgium. The ISP is also a reputable one, Belgacom, which is the (partly) government owned ISP/Telecom operator in Belgium/Brussels.

My company has 16 addresses in that range. I think this blacklisting is way to broad. Please remove this listing or be more specific because know hundreds of legitimate, non spamming organisations are affected.

    Best regards,
    Stijn

This seems very strange, as 50.0.0.0/12 was assigned and parceled out a couple of years ago.

50.0.193.61 is a part of 50.0.0.0/15, owned by sonic.net, a quite responsible provider commonly used by businesses in San Francisco.

  37. Hi, ejcmail.com here, we've been living happily at 69.72.170.236 (69.72.128.0/17) with only one insignificant rbl listing (bbq / niku.2ch.net) for years now. But, alas, we've had to move to a new home due to quality of service issues.

Our new home 96.31.88.200 (96.31.64.0/19) is not so clean; somebody left some small messes behind. The new host is hivelocity, and you can see via their referral whois server our allocated space within their block (96.31.88.199 - 204). My name is Fred, I'm the technical contact listed therin.

    Your listing for us:
Oooops 96.31.88.200 is currently listed in APEWS :-(

    History:
    Entry created 2011-09-05

If you check it, you can see that our rwhois listing was updated 2012-10-01 when we were given the ips.

I don't know if being listed in the rwhois is sufficient to qualify for requesting a delist, or if you need someone from the main cidr to post here. But if not, I'm hoping to at least find out what's wrong so I can get on their case.

Thanks for you help and time.

    1. I doubt this has anything to do with APEWS. (Remember close to half the internet ipv4 space is listed in APEWS.) I can't get to vosmomentsdevie.ca from my IP address either (at sonic.net). Maybe an out of date bogon filter? Seems odd though that it would be implemented at the web server. Are you sure that that site works at all?

I'd contact the technical folks at vosmomentsdevie.ca if you need to get this fixed.

  47. To Whom it may concern,

We only have one choice of internet provider where my business is in OH. Time warner cable. We use them for our business email server and some other services. You have blocked their entire subnet. It shows 74.219.112.0/20 as the entry when I put in my address of 74.219.126.218.

I have a ticket into Time Warner Cable to get removed from your list but they do not seem to be doing anything as it is still listed.

With no choices of providers what is one to do when the entire subnet is blocked like this? We need our email to go through and no other DNSBL lists us in any way. We are not spammers. We are a small company only sending emails to our clients. We have only been blocked a couple of times due to this problem but do not want any blocks at any DNSBL lists.

I would appreciate your time and co-operation on this matter,

    Thank you
